Designing Immersive Empathy 360-VR Experiences: An Experiential, Facilitated Approach

9:15am - 10:00am   Immersing Students in Empathy: What Does it Look Like and What are the Implications
Speaker: Dr. Milena Batanova, Research and Evaluation Manager, Harvard University

Empathy is complicated. It consists of multiple components with multiple antecedents and consequences that have multiple implications -- for the self and society. The case will be made that empathy, despite its barriers and issues, is a much needed social-emotional skill that requires honest reflections and deep connections. Issues and implications will be discussed in the context of VR and the higher education teaching landscape.

We will discuss the design and construction of virtual reality experiences, with a focus on picking the right tools for creating your experience. Additionally, we will discuss a few already completed experiences and the choices that went into their production.

Narrative 4, is a global organization that fosters empathy by breaking down barriers and shattering stereotypes through the exchange of stories across the world.

Speaker:  Lee Keylock, Director of Global Programs, Narritive 4.com

In this session you will  become part of a greater narrative by participating in  the story exchange- highlighting the need to integrate empathetic, social and emotional learning opportunities more deliberately into classrooms (thus improving positive school climate) in order to increase a student’s academic potential and desire to learn.   

2:15pm - 3:00pm   Debriefing/ Reviewing Empathy Senarios and 360 -VR Empathy Story Design & Update 360-VR Platform Resource
