Speakers for the Day:
Lance Eaton, Instructional Designer, Brandeis University
Danielle Leek, Director of Academic Innovation and Distance Education, Bunker Hill Community College

7:30am - 9:00am   Registration & Coffee

9:00am - 9:30am   Workshop Overview and Introductions: The Competent Communicator

Workshop facilitators introduce “The Competent Communicator” model as a framework for the day’s session and invite participants to describe their own stories of communicating with faculty as a means of self-introduction.

9:30am - 10:15am   Reflecting on Communication

In this portion of the workshop, participants dive into the role that perception and identity play in our communication situations. Participants use a series a “faculty personas” and personal self-assessment tool, to practice, out-loud (in small groups), different approaches to faculty who are reluctant to move forward on a new campus project. Facilitators offer communication coaching and present five key findings from recent research on best practices for talking with faculty.

10:15am - 10:30am   Break

10:30am – 11:45am   Interpersonal Sensitivity

An interactive session used to explore ways to assess eye contact, body language, turn-taking, and effective pauses – using video samples of real faculty discussing current campus technology issues.

11:45am – 12:45pm   Lunch

12:45pm – 1:45pm   Soliciting Feedback

A competent communicator is able to give and receive, this means being able to effectively listen and solicit effective feedback from faculty partners. Participants rehearse question and response strategies proven to promote empathetic listening with faculty.

1:45pm – 2:45pm   Creating an Ethic of Care

In the final stage of the workshop, participants conclude their participation with an “initial pitch” to a hypothetical new faculty member on campus. In this pitch, the goal is to highlight an “ethic of care” that is appropriate for the competent communicator. Participants share their pitch in a small group setting.

2:45pm – 3:00pm   Closing Thoughts

3:00pm   End
