Event Overview
People with disabilities have long been catalysts for innovation and early adopters of emerging technologies. As generative AI enters the accessibility landscape, it offers powerful new possibilities—from highly personalized supports to expanded access beyond traditional automated testing and code remediation. But alongside its promise come important limitations, risks, and ethical considerations.

Drawing on current research, real-world demonstrations, and applied AI initiatives at Carnegie Mellon University, this session explores where AI is already enhancing accessibility, where it falls short, and why human expertise and lived experience remain essential. Participants will engage in a grounded, human-centered conversation about how to thoughtfully integrate AI into accessibility efforts—moving beyond hype to practical, responsible impact. Together, we’ll imagine an accessible future where technology amplifies human insight rather than replacing it.

Session Outcomes:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:|
 - Identify current and emerging ways generative AI is being used to improve accessibility—and where its limitations persist
 - Evaluate the role of human judgment, oversight, and lived experience in AI-enabled accessibility solutions
 - Apply a human-centered framework to assess whether AI tools meaningfully advance access or simply create the illusion of inclusion
