Speaker: Eric Emet

Serving in my current position, as the Director of both Retention, and Campus Recreation and Athletics, I’ve been given me the opportunity to be immersed in my work’s mission; to get more students to graduation, and in the process, keep them active. It is my fifth position with the College over the previous 8 years. My roles at Goodwin have primarily been in operations and management; starting in Continuing Ed, moving to Enrollment Services, then to Financial Aid, and finally, to Career Services.

I received my bachelor’s degree in International Business, with a minor in Economics. My affinity for analytics can be traced way back to my youth, when, while lying in bed, I would calculate the batting averages of my beloved Los Angeles Dodgers players, while listing to them on the radio; using the dimly lit bedroom ceiling as my imaginary “smart board”. I would reconcile my research with the next day’s afternoon newspaper’s box score, immediately after school.

My formal statistical training can be credited to my college baseball coach at American International; and oh yeah, genetics. I was recruited as a catcher while a senior in high school, but when I arrived on campus, was 4 ¾ inches taller than the last time they saw me. During freshman physicals, the coach took me aside, handed me a clipboard, and asked, “When was the last time you pitched?” I got in 5 games that season, but tracked every pitch thrown that spring. The latter data providing me the material needed to build a scouting binder for every player and team in our conference. As an 18 year old, I realized the importance of slowing down to speed up, and the value of analytics.

To this day, and in each role I’ve had with the College, I collect and measure data, continuously striving to identify peak efficiencies, all the while, looking for trends. My Goodwin resume includes:
- Creating the Admissions Reservation Center; the College’s call-center
- Developing the dashboard for the Presidential Daily Report; identifying patterns and trends over a 3 year cycle
- Creating a rubric to manage the daily work flow for the Financial Aid department
- Creating the NEST, the Navigators Early Support Team; a support group used as a liaison between faculty and the Colleges core services
