This session will explore the accessibility features that come bundled with Apple products. Such strategies will be mainly focused on students with visual impairments and attention deficit disorders. Although, the strategies included in this session can be easily utilized for any students with diverse learning styles. The session will provide a practical demonstration on how to enable accessibility features on iOS devices (iPads, iPhones) and on Apple desktop computers). Features will include enabling text to speech, speech to text, screen zooming in/out, Voice over settings, creating global keyboard shortcuts.

10:55am - 11:45am Disability Services in Higher Education: The role of technology as a means of providing access
Speaker: Laura Patey, Associate Dean for Student Academic Resources, Wesleyan University

This session will provide an overview of the process for securing accommodations in higher education and the role that technology plays in providing access to information, programs and services. Some common accommodations on campuses, where technology plays an important role include: note taking, access to text material in alternate formats and access to media. We will review some of the key tools used in providing these accommodations and systems for managing production and delivery.

In the spring of 2014, Brown University began investigating ways to caption video content used for teaching, learning and/or documenting university events. Our goal: to lead a unified, campus-wide effort ensuring that we will meet the needs of all members of the Brown community. We will talk about our process, what we learned, and how we are working to continuously improve the service.

1:40pm to 2:30pm Creating Accessible Online Course Content
Presenter: Andrea Milligan, Director of Instructional Technology and Design, North Shore Community College

Accessibility is about making sure all students can easily access the course content so that they can focus their time, attention and learning on the content and not the technical barriers to the content. This workshop will address the best practices around ensure accessibility for any online content that instructors may use in face to face, hybrid, and online courses. Participants will walk away with a clear set of methods and resources to help them create content that all their students can benefit from.
