Bridging The Gap: Empowering Students with Disabilities Through the Use of Commercially Available and Customized Technologies

Speaker: Catherine Axe

Catherine Axe is currently Assistant Dean for Student Life and Director of Accessibility Services at Brown University where she has worked for the past twelve years. She chairs the Campus Access Advisory Committee (CAAC) that she founded in 2004 and has been working with that group to expand and manage technological accessibility on the campus.

Prior to working at Brown, she spent seven years working in disability services in the Washington, DC area at American University, Northern Virginia Community College, and George Mason University. Her work there also had a strong focus on increasing access in all capacities.

She has a Master’s degree in Education with a focus on counseling in higher education. Her higher education experience also includes roles in academic advising and career counseling.



Speaker: Gillian Bell

Gillian Bell is a Project Manager who joined the Academic Technology Group in 2014. She works with instructional designers and technologists to organize their work with faculty, manages complex projects and leads communication efforts about Academic Technology’s services.

As a Project Manager in the larger IT organization at Brown for six years, she lead the implementation of Google Apps for Education, managed an assessment of learning management systems and mentored staff in project management processes. She also served as the chair of the President’s Staff Advisory Council.

Prior to joining the staff at Brown, Gillian worked as a freelance illustrator and at galleries and theaters. She has a BFA from Parsons School of Design and earned her Project Management Professional certification in 2007.


Speaker: Andrea Milligan

Andrea Milligan is the Director of Instructional Technology and Design at North Shore Community College. Before coming to North Shore Community College, Andrea was the Director of Academic Technology at from Framingham State University, where she worked for over twelve years. Andrea has over ten years of practical and theoretical experience in promoting and facilitating the use of technology as an integral part of the total academic experience; helping faculty in the design and development of Web-enhanced, hybrid and online courses; providing professional development opportunities to faculty in using technology effectively in the teaching and learning environment; assisting and supporting faculty and students in the use of academic technology tools; and maintaining an awareness of the latest instructional technologies and emerging technologies that might have an impact on the teaching and learning environment.


Speaker: Laura Patey, M.Ed.

Laura Patey is the Associate Dean for Student Academic Resources at Wesleyan University. She has over thirty years of experience in disability services having previously served as Director of Access Services for Students with Disabilities at Lesley University and in a similar position at Wheelock College. She has also served on the Board of the Learning Disabilities Association of Massachusetts and the New England branch of the Association of Higher Education and Disabilities.


Speaker: Ricardo Poza

Ricardo Poza has a B.M. from Berklee College of Music. He is a musician, technologist, multimedia producer, educator and lecturer. He has over 12 years experience working in Higher Education, and currently works at Assumption College as Instructional Technology Manager and as a Graduate Research Assistant (College of Education) at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

 

Speaker: Catherine Hays Zabriskie

Catherine Hays Zabriskie is the Director of Academic Technology at Brown University. She oversees the Instructional Technology Group, Media Production Group and MultiMediaLabs. Her staff works in partnership with the University community to enhance teaching and learning and address strategic needs in support of faculty, staff and students through the effective use of technology.

Catherine received her B.S in Art History from the University for Colorado, and her M.S. in Educational Technology Leadership from the George Washington University.

Prior to coming to Brown University, Catherine supported faculty innovations in teaching and technology for the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Maryland for 12 years.
