Virtual Meetings for Communities of Practice: How Can We Make Them Inclusive, Easy, and Productive?

Sam Anderson

As Instructional Design and Faculty Support Coordinator at UMass Amherst, Sam assists, supports, and trains faculty, staff, and students in active learning tools and spaces (digital and analog), game-based learning, group and organizational development, and intellectual property. He manages support, training, and development of Moodle at UMass Amherst. Sam also regularly facilitates professional development events for higher ed organizations.

Kate Freedman

Kate Freedman is the Undergraduate Education Librarian at UMass Amherst. Kate coordinates the Libraries' Information Literacy Program and works with instructors to integrate research skills training into their courses. Beginning in 2014, Kate worked with a team of librarians at UMass to integrate communities of practice into the Libraries' organizational structure. She is the current facilitator of the Teaching and Learning Community of Practice, which is a supportive group of instructional librarians who meet on a monthly basis to discuss issues in their teaching practice. 

Kyle Stephanie Kraus

Kyle Stephanie Kraus, Technology Training Specialist - Information Technology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, provides orientation and training support for new Continuing & Professional Education (CPE), online instructors and students. Throughout the year, she facilitates numerous webinar, online courses and in-person workshops ranging from orientation to online instruction to course planning to technical software sessions. She also oversees the management of UMass Amherst’s CPE student orientation website, orientation class, and webinar sessions.

Kyle received a BA in Planned Studies - Student Development from Ithaca College and graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2008 with an M.Ed. in Educational Technology. She has worked at the university for the past 16 years in administrative and student support services. Her areas of interest include synchronous communication in online environments, the transition of traditional classroom methods to online education and human communication theory specific to online course facilitation.
