Event Overview
Technology Literacy is a term that we all use but how do we actually define Technology Literacy from a Higher Education Teaching and Learning perspective? Technology Literacy is clearly a literacy of the 21st century but how do we define, teach and assess if a student has mastered necessary skills to be successful in higher education and the workplace? Integrating technology into learning is a common practice, but what level of skills/knowledge do students need to attain to participate in the integration? What technology skills are appropriate for college entrance? What level skills should be attained to produce technology literate college graduates? Some high schools have technology requirements but we are finding that few students actually possess a comprehensive knowledge base. So we are presented with the question… What is Technology Literacy in Higher Education?
This will be a working SIG where representatives from various institutions can share what Technology Literacy is to them.
Learning Outcomes:
• Define Technology Literacy in Higher Education
• Determine how we teach and assess technology literacy achievement
• Identify and discuss preadmission testing and placement to determine if students possess the technical skills required to succeed in college
• Articulate the content which should be taught to achieve technology literacy
• Align critical thinking, problem solving, decision making and digital citizenship with concrete skills
