Designing Interfaces for the User

Event Schedule:
8:00am – 10:00am Registration and Coffee

10:00am – 11:00am Improving an Interface Without Years of Experience
Speaker: Lindsay Barton, Assistant Director for Policy, Planning, and Analysis in the Library & Technology Services, Brandeis University

This session will focus on the redesign of the Brandeis University single sign-on login page, accessed 16,000 times daily by faculty, staff, and students. With the redesign in place, the login page is now more aesthetically pleasing, more accessible, and more functional.

We will concentrate on the steps taken to improve the page, and how participants can apply those steps to improve interfaces at their own institutions.

11:00am - 11:10am Break

11:10am – 12:10pm Designing for Sakai
Speaker: James Milam, Senior Designer, Yale University

In this session, James will discuss the challenges and opportunities in designing for Yale's institutional, Sakai-based LMS, Yale Classes*v2. We'll focus on the complexity of dealing with an open-source tool—built by a loose collection of programmers from across the world—that requires visual design consistency to create an effective and trustworthy user experience. We'll also discuss the need to set design priorities based on support feedback and enterprise-level branding.

12:10pm – 1:00pm Lunch

1:00pm – 2:00pm Redesign Using Usability Data and Heuristic Review

Speaker: Melanie St. James, Manager, Design and Usability Services, Tufts University

This session will focus on two recent redesign projects from Tufts University: "Tufts Digital Library" (Dec. 2012), and "Geodata at Tufts" (mid 2013). Both projects drew heavily on usability studies and heuristic evaluations to guide the redesign work.

2:00pm - 2:10pm Break

2:10pm – 3:10pm Hands-on Design Workshop

In this workshop, participants will try their hands at improving a few interfaces. The speakers will provide some examples, and participants will also be encouraged to bring interfaces from their campuses that need improvement.

3:10pm End
