The Digital Backpack: Next Generation Digital Learning Environments

Malcolm Brown

Malcolm Brown has been Director of the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative since 2009 and has initiated major ELI undertakings such as its Seeking Evidence of Impact program, the annual Key Issues survey, and the Learning Space Rating System. Prior to assuming the ELI directorship, he was the Director of Academic Computing at Dartmouth College, overseeing a team active in instructional technology, research computing, classroom technology, and pedagogical innovation. During his tenure at Dartmouth, he worked actively with the ELI, contributing chapters to the EDUCAUSE eBooks, helping to plan focus sessions, and serving on the ELI Advisory Board. He has served as a faculty member of the EDUCAUSE Learning Technology Leadership program. He has been on the Advisory board for the Horizon Report since its inception in 2004 and served as Chair of Board of the New Media Consortium. Malcolm holds a pair of BA degrees from UC Santa Cruz; studied in Freiburg, Germany, on Fulbright scholarships; and has a PhD in German Studies from Stanford University. He has taught several academic courses on Nietzsche and maintains the Nietzsche Chronicle web site. He is a member of the Frye Institute class of 2002.


Michael Goudzwaard

Mike is an Learning Designer at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire where he works with faculty to empower student learning through community engagement, emerging instructional pedagogy, and educational technology. He is the Lead Designer and Developer for Dartmouth’s digital learning initiatives, which includes DartmouthX MOOCs (massive-open-online-courses). Mike chairs the Instructional Design community of practice at Dartmouth and writes and speaks regularly about teaching, learning, and educational technology. He is a member of the EDUCAUSE Institute Learning Technologies Leadership class of 2016.

Mike received a B.A. in History from Calvin College and a M.S. in Environmental Studies from Antioch University New England. Prior to Dartmouth, Mike taught quantitative literacy (thinking critically about numbers) as a member of the adjunct faculty at Keene State College in southern New Hampshire.


Kim Round

Dr. Kim Round is Director of Instructional Technology at Saint Anselm College, having over seventeen years experience in various higher ed technology leadership roles. Particularly, Kim is passionate about investigating how instructional design and technology innovations can enhance teaching and learning. Kim also serves as a professor at Harvard University Extension School, Brandeis University and Saint Anselm College, teaching courses in adult online learning theory, instructional technology and human computer interaction. She holds a Ph.D. in Computing Technology in Education from Nova Southeastern University.  Her research interests include next generation digital learning environments, active learning classrooms, online program quality and effective instructional design practices.  In addition, Kim leads the NERCOMP Instructional Design CoP and is a frequent presenter at Educause, NERCOMP and ELI conferences.
