Event Overview

In today’s IT cultural economy, nothing is more critical to organizational and individual success than communication and relationship management. Emotional intelligence (EI) is a set of five core competencies, self-awareness; self-regulation; motivation; social interactions; and relationship management, that when successfully developed, facilitate individual improvement in communication and social interaction. Research shows that improvement in these EI competencies contributes to individual and organizational success more than technical and knowledge based skills alone (Goleman, 2004).

The impetus for this workshop is an inherent tension between EI philosophy and IT culture: that the tools necessary for emotional intelligence, such as patience, self-reflection, understanding, and optimism, are at odds with the culture of technology itself, which is a fast-paced, rapid change, and narrow expertise environment in which individuals on all fronts expect durable, “on the fly” solutions.

Session outcomes:
1. Learn EI leadership and management competencies to help keep IT organizations responsive and successful
2. A personal, baseline EI assessment to assess individual and social competencies
3. Understand ongoing EI research and techniques for managing workplace scenarios. The goal of this workshop is for participants to use the research, rationale, and baseline EI assessments/EI activities in their IT organizational contexts and broadly build EI into everyday IT organizational cultures and contexts.
