IT Leadership and Professional Development through Emotional Intelligence

7:30am – 9:00am Registration and Coffee

9:00am – 9:10am Welcome and Overview

9:10am -  9:50am Emotional Intelligence Deconstructed… Why does this stuff matter anyway?

Speaker: Michael Kubit, Deputy Chief Information Officer, Case Western Reserve University

Today’s rapid pace of technological change requires IT organizations that are agile, responsive, collaborative and aligned with the priorities of the institutions they serve. Simultaneously, higher education is facing an unprecedented set of challenges and opportunities. In many cases, fundamental changes are required in order for IT organizations to maintain relevance. These realities often require a new type of organization, and more importantly, a new approach to leadership. The effective mastery of these critical leadership competencies can transform organizations and enable high-performing environments where individuals feel fruitful, fulfilled and engaged. Teams functioning in this manner can transform the organizations they serve and truly make an impact during this time of disruptive change.

9:50am - 10:00am Break

10:00am – 11:30am Emotional Intelligence – The X-factor for individual AND organizational performance? How did we get here?

Speaker: John Sherlock, Western Carolina University, EI Research and Group Engagement

Scholars have been studying the essential characteristics of effective leaders and organizations for decades. But in the last decade, in particular, emotional intelligence (EI) has gained extraordinary scholarly and practitioner interest as a unique characteristic of effective leaders AND effective organizations. This presentation focuses on the history of EI, highlighting both the research insights and controversies concerning EI as a leadership construct. The session will also include a Q&A/conversation that invites participants to bring their own questions and examples.

11:30am – 12:15pm Baseline EI assessment/Activity

In this session, participants evaluate levels of their EI competencies, and application of skills in practice. With time remaining, we will discuss contexts, steps, and scenarios for enhancement. Participants will also use results for the afternoon sessions that focus, respectively, on individual and social oriented competencies.

12:15pm – 1:00pm Lunch

1:00pm – 1:45pm EI at Work

Speaker: Dave Wedaman, Director for Research and Instruction Services, Brandeis University

I serve my workplace as a developmental coach and "communication help desk". I will describe recent work I've been involved in that aims at supporting significant individual growth and improved group function that supports meaningful EI-related skills development across Goleman's five EI categories (Self-awareness, Self-regulation, Social skill, Empathy, and Motivation). I'll share insights and lessons learned and I'll lead participants in a hands-on session drawing on techniques we've used with success.

1:50pm – 2:35pm Managing with Emotional Intelligence
Speaker: Joan Cheverie, Manager, Professional Development Programs, EDUCAUSE

This session examines how team members, including managers, can harness social interaction emotional intelligence (EI) competencies for IT support across campus. While the components of EI remain the same, the application, skills, and case studies differ given particular group dynamics and IT organizational structures, IT contexts, whether for student services, libraries, administrative, etc., and types of technical support involved.
