IT Leadership and Professional Development through Emotional Intelligence

Speaker: Joan Cheverie

Joan Cheverie is the Manager, Professional Development Programs for EDUCAUSE. In this capacity, she supports and promotes community collaboration in order to enable EDUCAUSE to design professional programs to advance IT leadership in higher education, with a specific focus on those who lead, manage, and use information resources to shape strategic decisions. She offers sessions on emotional intelligence for managers and leaders at the EDUCAUSE Institute. Prior to this position, she served as Policy Specialist for the EDUCAUSE Washington Office, which dealt with critical IT policy issues arising both in Washington, D.C. and on campus.

Joan joined EDUCAUSE from Georgetown University where she was the Head of Copyright and Rights Management. She previously held positions as head of digital services, head of government information, and reference librarian. She has also served as a Visiting Program Officer for the Coalition for Networked Information, and she was a 2008 Fellow from the Frye Leadership Institute (now Leading Change Institute).

She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Holyoke College and Masters degrees from both Georgetown University and The Catholic University of America.


Speaker: Michael Kubit

As Deputy Chief Information Officer (CIO), Michael is responsible for operational excellence of the central instructional, research and administrative information technology and operations at Case Western Reserve University. Working with the CIO, Michael is leading an organizational transformation effort aimed at strategically aligning ITS with the teaching, learning and research mission of CWRU.

Over the course of his career, Michael has been asked to establish and lead new organizational units, or assume leadership over areas requiring revitalization. His role as “change agent” has afforded the opportunity to build new teams, develop strategic and operational plans and to lead in the development of new leaders as well as new approaches in service delivery.

Michael is a Frye Fellow and alumni of the EDUCAUSE Institute Leadership program. He is a member of the Society of Information Managers and a Council Member for the Senior IT Leadership Roundtable. Michael holds certificates in Excellence in Leadership, as well as Developing Leadership through Emotional Intelligence. He is a certified executive coach and carries accreditation to administer the Emotional and Social Competency Inventory (ESCI) assessment.

Michael completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Cleveland State University and an MBA from the Weatherhead School of Management.


Speaker: John Sherlock

John is a tenured associate professor at Western Carolina University, a campus of the University of North Carolina system with 10,000 students, located in the western mountains of the state. He has been on the faculty there since 2002 and currently serves as director of the university’s master’s degree program in Human Resources. He previously taught at University of Maryland and George Washington University.

John is an active scholar in the field, with over forty (40) published articles and has given more than seventy-five (75) live presentations on various human resource and management topics.

Prior to academic life, John worked in the wireless communications industry for 20 years in various management capacities, overseeing functions including business development, operations, and human resources.

John is married with four grown children and lives in Asheville, NC.


Speaker: David Wedaman

As Director for Research and Instruction Services at Brandeis University, David helps lead a team of reference librarians and instructional technologists providing a broad range of services and programs supporting teaching, learning, and scholarship.

David's background is in higher education, instructional technology, and library-I.T. collaboration. He holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Brandeis, an M.A. in Humanities from Indiana State University, and has taught numerous French, Writing, and Humanities courses. In his years in I.T. at Brandeis, David worked in various capacities related to the support of instructional technology and user services, including managing the Language Media Center, Instructional Technology Resource Center, and Media Services group, as well as contributing to the management of key services-the course management system, model teaching and learning projects, classroom technology support, and public computing services. More recently, David's interests focus on integrating library and I.T. resources in instruction and research and exploring new areas of collaboration between faculty, students, and I.T. and library staff in teaching and learning. David sits on the SIG Masters Committee and the Program Committee, has hosted recent SIGs on videoconferencing and pedagogy, and has presented at the NERCOMP annual conference and at SIGs on student management and course management systems.
