Event Overview

Gamification is the use of game elements in non-gaming contexts. It’s the new buzzword in more than a dozen fields of study including entrepreneurship, psychology, education, design, science, history and technology. However, it takes more than the manipulation of badges, points or leader boards to create rich learning experiences. Educators such as Jane McGonigal,Lee Sheldon, Jesse Schell, Katie Salen and Karl Knapp use Gameful Learning to create complex systems that drive student curiosity and discovery. Schools, like New York's Quest to Learn, are bringing educators and designers together to create new curricular platforms utilizing game design principles. There is no magic lesson plan to create a perfect interactive environment, but there are design elements and guidelines that will help you explore your own educational adventures, developing the curricular scaffolding to reach the highest-levels of Bloom's Taxonomy. This interactive workshop will reveal critical game design elements that will turn your learning environment into a journey of cognitive discovery. Application will include face-to-face, blended, hybrid and online learning environments for both education or corporate fields. The use of games and badging systems will be examined in both digital and analog form. This is a hands-on critical problem-solving quest for the curious.

At the end of this session participants will be able to: - Analyze the importance of play, games and learning
- Understand the three critical elements of game design
- Apply game elements to learning activities
- Synthesize game design elements and different modes of delivery

Activities for the session will include:
- Introduction and lecture concerning game design in Instructional Design
- Group work and debriefing
- Small group work: exercises to develop seed ideas for application
