Three elements of design that make games successful will be outlined for creating engaging interactive content for workshops, training or the classroom. The talk will also include the differences between game-based design and gamification. There will be a Q and A session at the end of the talk.

Badges in a Graduate Class? Crazy enough that it might just work!
Speaker: Apostolos Koutropoulos, Online Program Manager, Applied Linguistics, University of Massachusetts - Boston

In this presentation I will be presenting some initial data from an attempt to integrate alternative credentialing in my graduate instructional design course by including some basic gamification elements. This presentation will discuss what I considered, what made the cut, and what ideas are in stock for future implementations. This presentation is equal parts game-based elements and alternative credentials.

Case Study: The Design Thinking Game
Speaker: Mish McIntyre, Foundation Studies Program Coordinator, NESAD, Suffolk University – Boston

There are plenty of simple games to add to your training or classroom like Jeopardy and Crossword puzzles, but they lack a connection to the underlying framework of the learning experience. I will present a pilot case study of my work with faculty at the Art & Design School at Suffolk University, where I created "The Design Thinking Game," which connected content directly to the learning experience. Participants of this session will spend time working through the Design Thinking Game and how they may be able to apply the same ideas to their work.
