Navigating the New Era of Hiring in Higher Ed: Adapting to Changing Needs and Expectations - a Leadership Ecosystem Webinar
Mary Beth Baker and Phil Goldstein
Phil and Mary Beth have worked with hundreds of higher learning organizations across the country to help them meet their technology-related goals. Their work with higher education began at Coopers & Lybrand, consulting on technology, process improvement, and strategy for colleges, universities, and other non-profit organizations. After C&L merged with PriceWaterhouse, both Phil and Mary Beth continued as partners directing the higher education consulting division. Phil and Mary Beth have both served as research fellows at the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research, where they led numerous IT-related research studies. They have extensive experience designing and strengthening IT strategy, improving organizational effectiveness, and recruiting senior technology leaders. Mary Beth brings in-depth experience designing IT governance structures and processes and working with academic medical centers. Phil has additional expertise in selecting, planning, and implementing enterprise administrative software.
Michael Cato
Michael leads Bowdoin College's Information Technology (IT) strategy and operations through the Information and Technology department and has spent over 20 years in Higher Education IT. He previously served in IT roles at Vassar College, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Michael is active in a number of professional organizations with an emphasis on leadership development, inclusive leadership, and aligning IT with strategic priorities. He is the 2022 Technology Executive of the Year – Education award winner from the IT Senior Management Forum (ITSMF), and the 2021 recipient of the EDUCAUSE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Leadership Award.
Michael is the faculty director for the Next Leaders Fellowship, a program that identifies, develops, and advocates for information and technology professionals in higher education, with a special emphasis on developing leaders from historically excluded backgrounds. He is a faculty member of the Council of Australasian University Directors of Information Technology (CAUDIT) Leadership Institutes. Michael is a member of the Society for Information Management (SIM) and the Information Technology Senior Management Forum (ITSMF), an EDUCAUSE Leading Change/Frye Fellow, and an alum of Leadership North Carolina. He previously served as a faculty member for the EDUCAUSE Institute Leadership and Management Programs, the State University of New York (SUNY) SAIL CIO Academy, and has served as a mentor in the EDUCAUSE Hawkins Leadership Roundtable.
Michael currently serves on the board for Educate Maine, the Seguinland Institute, an educational non-profit in Georgetown, Maine, and Bangor Savings Bank. He holds a B.S. in Zoology from Andrews University and an M.B.A. from Wake Forest University.
Michael loves to learn, read, eat, and occasionally cook, and starts most weekdays being humbled by CrossFit. He is raising an awesome son with his partner and wife Heather.
Carols Garcia
Carlos García is Vice President of Operations for Technology & Human Resources and Chief Information Officer at Vassar College. With over 20 years in higher education, Carlos has led initiatives in IT transformation, organization building, strategic planning, and compliance. At Vassar, his role bridges talent and technology, creating unique advantages to achieve institutional objectives. He oversees IT, HR, and Title IX/EOAA, taking an integrated approach to campus administration that prioritizes operational efficiency while fostering a culture of inclusion and compliance. With extensive global experience, Carlos has built and retained high-performing teams, advanced Vassar's compensation practices, and negotiated major union contracts. He holds an MBA from NYU’s Stern School of Business and a bachelor's degree with majors in Cinema and Computer Science.
Jonathan Kulp
Jonathan Kulp is a dynamic and results-driven Human Resources professional with a proven track record of strategic leadership across Dartmouth College and the broader Upper Valley community. Known for his ability to foster meaningful collaborations and quickly adapt to the diverse needs of stakeholders, Jonathan has led numerous HR initiatives that have significantly enhanced service delivery. His expertise includes optimizing hiring practices, developing job descriptions, and refining compensation programs, all while maintaining a steadfast commitment to transparency and advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles.
Originally from Allentown, Pennsylvania, Jonathan has deep roots in Vermont, where his family maintained a home. He often remarks that while he hails from Pennsylvania, his heart belongs to New England. Jonathan attended Kutztown University, where his mother served as a professor, instilling in him a lifelong connection to higher education.
Jonathan’s professional journey began in the service industry, where he developed a strong foundation in customer service and HR. He joined Dartmouth as Program Manager for Information Technology and Consulting (ITC), focusing on increasing organizational transparency, crafting tiered job descriptions, implementing fair hiring practices, fostering professional development opportunities, and providing strategic support to senior leadership within ITC and across the institution.
Now serving as the HR Business Partner for ITC, with reporting lines to both divisional leadership and HR, Jonathan continues to use the same core professional principles to guide his work:
