9:00am – 9:45am Tried and True: Technical Training and Documentation Tips

Speakers:
Laurie Hebert, Lead Information Technologist Enrollment Services, University of Rhode Island
Rahat Sharif, Student, University of Rhode Island

Effective training and documentation of technical support procedures is critical to the success of any IT student team. Proper training results in a confident and capable team member. However, training must be based upon solid documentation in order to be successful, especially given the fact that students do move on and it is imperative that their unique acquired knowledge of the systems they supported does not move with them! This presentation will focus on methods used to train IT students using a variety of techniques such as mentoring, shadowing, accountability, documentation and a dose of "show and tell".

11:10am -12:00pm Understanding Your Community: Managing and Tracking Student Employee Information
Speaker: J’Vaughn Johnson, Assistant Program Manager, Student Technology Collaborative, Yale ITS Early Career Development Program, Yale University

With around 200 student employees, a need has been identified to come up with an effective solution for managing and tracking student employee information. It can become difficult to identify “who is who” among your student employees; what skill sets do they have? What are their educational goals relating to the job? Are they trying to strengthen any weaknesses? Are they mentoring and training other student employees? Having this information visible to managers and student employees could be beneficial to the growth and strength of the student employee community. This presentation will focus on the ideas and design of a potential solution in progress for effectively managing and tracking student employee information and performance.
