Student Employee Management: Effectively Motivating and Managing Performance to Enhance their Education
Speaker: Mary Fetherston
Mary Fetherston has been at the University of Rhode Island for seventeen years. Initially hired as the Supervisor of the Language Lab, she quickly increased the student budget and provided additional help to faculty and classrooms. Mary is now the Associate Director for Media and Technology Services managing End User Support and Student Employee Development, including the Help Desk and Classroom Media Assistance groups. She has ten direct report staff who supervise about one hundred student employees.
Speaker: Lily Hall
Lily Hall has been the graduate assistant at Classroom Media Assistance (CMA) since last fall, at the University of Rhode Island (URI). Lily provides mentoring, academic and occupational coaching to thirty undergraduate student technicians. She strives to promote a positive team-building environment to enhance the motivation of the student. Prior to working in CMA, Lily worked as a grad student at URI's Academic Enhancement Center (AEC) where she provided academic coaching for students struggling with their scholastic performance. She also supervised twenty undergraduate supplemental instruction (SI) leaders who provided additional instruction to college students in hard math and science courses. Lily is currently working on her doctorate in School Psychology. Her thesis research focused on examining the relationship between reading ability and reading self-concept among students in differing socio-economic schools. Her dissertation research includes an investigation of the predicting cognitive variables associated with reading performance.
Speaker: Laurie Hebert
Laurie Hebert has been in the information technology field both in private and public sectors for over 25 years and holds an MA in Education. She has worked for the University of Rhode Island for over 20 years. Her experience includes leadership, team-building, project management, desktop support, web development, teaching and training. Her current position supports all of the information technology needs for the department of Enrollment Services which is comprised of student Billing, Financial Aid and Records/Registration. Laurie supervises the Enrollment Services Technical Team (ESTT) consisting of a graduate student team lead and 3 undergraduates. Laurie has also worked as an adjunct professor at CCRI teaching computer courses and plans on graduating with her MLIS in December 2014.
Speaker: J’Vaughn Johnson
J’Vaughn Johnson is participating in the Yale Information Technology Services Early Career Development Program (ECDP). The ECDP is an 18-month program which consists of three 6 month rotational assignments in areas within Yale Information Technology Services. The program is designed for recent college graduates to learn about technology in higher education, gain new skills, and contribute to the development and support of Yale’s IT services. He has been working at Yale since August 2014 in the Student Technology Collaborative group.
J’Vaughn graduated in May 2013 with a degree in Computer Science from the University of Connecticut (UConn). While at UConn, J’Vaughn remained engaged in extracurricular activities ranging from leadership and mentorship roles to dancing.
