Event Overview
Games have the potential to improve formal education because at their root they are engaging, interactive learning experiences. This idea has been recently explored in two academic strands: game-based learning and gamification. While strategies differ in each strand, both rely upon game designers’ and educators’ ability to leverage game mechanics, dynamics, and principles to approach traditional learning goals.
This workshop will help instructors, instructional designers, and other education professionals understand and apply games and game structures to the creation of learning experiences. The opening discussion will address what games are; how they function; the relationship between designers, games, and players; and the benefits and costs of games for education. Following the discussion, participants will engage in a group workshop session to design their own games. Participants are encouraged to bring their own educational problem to troubleshoot during the game development portion of the event.
Session Outcomes:
- Gain a broad understanding of the field of Games and Learning.
- Be able to identify, critically analyze, and design games and game-like systems.
- Determine the affordances and constraints of using games and game structures in formal education.
