Event Overview
In the past few years, much has been written around the need for the IT workforce to be more diverse. "Higher Education IT leaders are increasingly paying attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as critical to strategic workforce development and as a key strategic issue" (A Conversation about DEI and Top 10 Issues, EDUCAUSE Review, February 26, 2018). However, diversity, equity, and inclusion existed long before now and apply beyond our workforce. From how we recruit our workforce, to working together, our conscious and implicit biases, our unconscious biases, to challenging and uncomfortable conversations (language is powerful and hurtful).
Join us for an interactive day as we explore what we mean by diversity, equity and inclusion, what it means to our students, and how we can make it more than an initiative. We'll have a series of role playing activities (some may make you uncomfortable), and are meant to evoke honest discussion. We are creating a brave space - we want the conversation to continue beyond the workshop!
Session Outcomes:
- Gain a better understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion; definitions that you can live with.
- Faculty will assist participants in the the creation of concrete examples of ways to "live" and "think" inclusively in their departments and collaborations across campus.
- Particpate in role playing exercises that evoke thoughts and discussion about inclusion.
- Develop ideas on marketing your department for natural inclusion; the information is already there.
- Gain an understanding of their-your own role in DEI; you don't have to like it, but accept that it exists and is a community role.
- Provide each other with the freedom to engage and explore what we each bring to the table - no magic bullets - just magic!
