Little College, Big World: Technology Leadership Challenges at the Small College

William Anderson
Bill Anderson has been CIO at Saint Michael’s College since 2002. During this time IT has built a second active-active data center, implemented an equipment replacement cycle, implemented a wireless campus solution, standardized and upgraded classroom technology, developed an instructional technology team that supports several effective technology based instructional programs, and implemented new cabinet and trustee reporting models that were genesis of the college’s new business intelligence program. The work of the IT Department at Saint Michael’s has been featured in Sync Magazine and U.S. Business Executive.

As CIO he has given presentations and/or served on panels at EDUCAUSE, NERCOMP, Datatel Client Executive Institute, the Datatel Users Group, Ellucian Live, SCUP, EACUBO and NACUBO. He and Director of Business Intelligence and Associate CIO Mary Jane Russell collaborated on an early Educause Review article, Evolutionary Analytics: BI on a Shoestring.

Bill taught in the Department of Business Administration and the Department of Computer Science beginning in 1974, and served in most of the College faculty leadership positions. He has a background in software development and technology management, and successfully developed and sold three software businesses. He attended Dartmouth College, the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration, and the University of Chicago.

Kevin Brassard


Kevin has been the Chief Information Officer at Nichols College since January, 2005. During his time at Nichols, Kevin has been a part of many significant changes. Kevin managed the merging of the Information Technology department with the Library, identifying opportunities to blend the best services of each area in support of students and faculty. Kevin has lead the I.T. team on several significant initiatives at Nichols; including the implementations of a new student information system, student portal, CRM system, new web site, and many other supporting systems. 

In addition to his responsibilities as CIO, Kevin assumed management responsibilities for the Division of Graduate and Professional Studies at Nichols from February, 2012 through June, 2013. In this transitional role, Kevin was tasked with reorganizing and sharpening the organizational structure, integrating academic oversight with the day division, and increasing enrollment. 

Kevin finds the most interest in working on opportunities to enhance the living and learning environment at Nichols. As such, Kevin actively engages with faculty and students on a regular basis. Although not an academic by trade, Kevin has not been a stranger in the classroom. He is a frequent guest lecturer on topics such as information security and systems strategies. Kevin has also taught classes on project management and information technology strategies. 

Kevin has served as an appointed member of the Nercomp Board of Trustees for the past two years. In his tenure on the Board, Kevin has become an active and engaged member of both the Vendor and Licensing and the Professional Development Committees. Kevin is also part of the team that spearheaded the replacement and upgrade of the Nercomp website and its integrated association management system. 

Kevin is also currently the vice-chair of the committee for the Nercomp annual conference scheduled for March, 2016. For the previous three years, Kevin served as a member on the conference committee; with the last two years serving as a track chair. In the area of professional development, Kevin has also facilitated a PDO day on the topic of document management and workflow technologies. 

Prior to Nichols College, Kevin was the Regional Information Technology Director for GKN Sinter Metals in Worcester, MA; overseeing manufacturing technology operations at six plants in Massachusetts and Wisconsin. Kevin has over 30 years of experience in information technology, spanning industries such as high tech manufacturing, managed health care, and automotive parts manufacturing. During his professional career, Kevin has served as the Chairman and Treasurer of the MFG/PRO New England User’s Group, and was a member of the Oracle Automotive Customer Advisory Board. 

Kevin has an M.S. degree in Computer Information Systems from Bentley University, and a B.S. degree in Business Administration from Western New England University.

Carol Thomas
Carol Thomas is Vice President for Information Technology at New England College in Henniker, NH. Prior to joining New England College Carol served as a technology leadership, assessment, and management consultant; an ERP and CRM systems optimizer; and a change management advisor to several College presidents. She served as Vice President for Information Technology and CIO at Columbus State Community College in Columbus, OH, and Middlesex Community College in Lowell, MA. She is a recognized expert in the use of technology to support the student experience, improve enrollment, and ensure access to learning resources. Carol is a published author and frequent presenter, as well as an experienced educator helping to prepare the next generation of technologists. Carol is a Prosci® certified change management consultant, a Barrett Values Centre cultural transformation tools consultant, and certified executive coach. She holds a Master of Arts from New School University in New York, NY and is currently pursuing her doctorate in higher education leadership at New England College.
